It was first produced in 1985 by Elisabetta Geppetti, who had recently purchased the estate and wanted to create a unique wine that would express the terroir of the area. The blend consists of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petit Verdot grapes grown on the estate’s vineyards.
The first vintage of Saffredi was released in 1988 and it quickly gained recognition for its quality and complexity. In 1997, Robert Parker awarded it a score of 95 points, cementing its reputation as one of Italy’s top wines. Since then, Saffredi has consistently been rated highly by critics and is considered one of the best wines from Tuscany. Notable vintages include 2000, 2004, 2007, 2010 and 2015.
