The winery was founded in 1831 by the Cinzano family and has been producing wines since then. The first vintage of Tenuta Col d'Orcia Brunello di Montalcino DOCG was released in 1978. Since then, it has become one of the most sought-after wines from this region. Notable vintages include 1982, 1985, 1988, 1990, 1997, 1998, 2000 and 2004. In 2006, Tenuta Col d'Orcia was awarded the prestigious Tre Bicchieri award for its 2004 vintage. This award is given to only the best wines in Italy each year and is a testament to the quality of this wine.
